It is now a consolidated opinion that Sport represents a universal phenomenon that has the advantage of being able to be transmitted and taught in ways that transcend cultural barriers. For this reason, sport is increasingly used in situations of social hardship to improve the inclusion and integration of those subjects who would otherwise be excluded due to their linguistic, cultural, economic or social conditions. One of the most interesting fields of application in this sense is that linked to Motor Activity projects aimed at migrants and asylum seekers, and among these projects developed by the Sports Federations of the States of the European Union, those developed through the game of football manage to generate significant involvement and results. According to the data provided by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the RETE! Project, developed by the Youth and School Sector and aimed at migrant minors and asylum seekers, has seen the numbers relating to participants and reception centres involved almost tripled in the 5 years. life of the project. The trend has not decreased even with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, a sign that Motor Activity is an important and performing tool in the process of inclusion of individuals in distress.

COVID-19 pandemic has drastically reduced physical activity levels in the global population, due to the limitation of movements and social life imposed by local governments. Sedentary behaviors are known to be strictly associated with higher risks to develop diseases (Allen et al., 2017). Italy was the first country in which severe lockdown periods were imposed on the population, to limit virus circulation. Our study aimed to analyze lifestyle habits in a group of 14 volunteer women, aged from 40 to 50 years, for 2 years, in a telemonitoring manner. Semi-Structured questionnaires on lifestyle habits, anthropometric measures, sleep, physical activity monitoring by smartphone were recorded before, during, and after lockdown. Statistical analysis was conducted with the t-Student test and ANOVA, normal distribution of data was tested with the Shapiro Wilk test. During the lockdown, the daily number of steps shows a reduction of -65%. The number of weekly walking kilometers was drastically reduced by -70%. No statistically significant improvements were registered in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), although the number of daily steps had returned to pre-COVID levels. Mental alterations were described during the COVID-19 pandemic and sleep deprivation has been reported as a consequence of social isolation. In Italy, the COVID-19 pandemic spread out at the beginning of 2020 determining severe lockdown periods. The aim of our study was to observe the effects of lockdown on sleep and anxiety in trained non-professional subjects and professional athletes who continued to train during the lockdown period. Forty-six subjects (21 trained non-professional subjects and 25 professional athletes) were recruited from a variety of team and individual sports to complete a battery of previously validated and widely used questionnaires assessing psychometric and anthropometric parameters, physical activity levels, lifestyle habits, and sleep quality. Subjects were aged 27.0 ± 5.14. All items were evaluated as percentages and chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were performed, as appropriate. Our data showed that the prevalence of the difficulty of falling asleep (over 30%), the tendency of nocturnal awakenings (over 30%), and moderate anxiety (over 38%) were at the same extent in the two groups. Of the professional athletes, 72.73% declared snoring during sleep vs 42.86% of non-professional subjects. No other significant differences were found between the two groups except for the perception of being constant in daily activity, significantly more reported by trained subjects (p < 0.005). Our data show a similar scenario of anxiety and sleep disturbances for the two groups, suggesting that lockdown by the COVID-19 pandemic has partially mitigated the known beneficial effects due to physical activity on mental health and sleep quality. Further analyses are necessary to define the associated risk factors.
